Summary

This annual grant opportunity is designed primarily for research institutions, universities, labs, or extension partners working on honey bee health and promotion. Private individuals, typical beekeepers or small businesses are generally not the target applicants. The focus is on projects that help address challenges in honey bee colony health and production within the state.

Eligible applicants are invited to submit proposals addressing key research priorities such as control of mites (including Varroa and Tropilaelaps), genetic breeding of bees, bee nutrition, and managing disease agents such as Nosema. The geographic scope covers the entire state. The funds come from a dedicated “honey fund” generated via a colony assessment and directed to research and promotion of the honey‑bee industry within North Dakota.

The grant amounts vary and there is no fixed floor or cap listed; recent solicitations indicate a funding pool of roughly $250,000 available in total for the cycle. Applicants may request any reasonable amount, and the awarding agency reserves the right to offer less than requested. Projects may be new or extensions of previous work. Grant durations are flexible (applicants must propose a project end date).

The benefit of this grant is that it provides funding to support scientific or extension‑type work that can yield practical solutions for beekeepers, improve bee health and hive management, and support the pollination and honey production sector.

If you are part of a qualified research or extension entity in North Dakota with the capacity to design and carry out honey‑bee health projects in line with the specified priorities, this opportunity is worth exploring.
