Summary
This grant program supports a broad range of nonprofit and education organizations, as well as students, across Idaho. Each year, it makes nearly 1,800 awards totaling around $12 million in funding to help strengthen communities across the state. The intent is to drive philanthropic investment in Idaho’s social fabric—supporting nonprofit operations, new programs, and urgent local needs like education, housing, arts, and community development.
One major component is a regional “Forever Idaho” grant cycle, which distributes flexible funding across four parts of the state. Nonprofits (typically 501(c)(3)s) and public schools can apply, and grants most often fall in the $3,000–$8,000 range, though awards may go as high as $25,000. These unrestricted funds can be used for core costs (payroll, rent, utilities), programming, or capital-project priorities depending on the organization’s needs.
There’s also a fund that specifically supports educational gaps: one grant program focuses on preschool through K–12 programs (including public and charter schools and school libraries), with typical awards between $10,000 and $20,000. These funds are intended to address critical educational shortfalls, boost access, and strengthen supplemental learning.
A youth-philanthropy component gives high school students in rural Idaho hands-on experience leading grantmaking: participating schools distribute grant dollars (e.g. $5,000 per school) to local nonprofits, with the goal of empowering young leaders to engage with community issues.
For students, there’s a loan-assistance fund that helps upper-class undergraduates stay in school when unexpected financial challenges arise. Institutions that qualify receive a minimum of $5,000 per award to support those students.
In addition, the program includes more targeted regional funds—for example, a beautification fund in southeast Idaho supports recreational and landscaping projects, and a southeastern arts fund supports performances, classes, and public arts displays.
