Summary
Funding through several pathways: open competitive grants (where programs publish guidelines and invite applications) and smaller “emerging” grants for nonprofits that are not yet fully eligible for core support. Applicants typically begin by reaching out or submitting a brief expression of interest or letter of intent to ensure alignment. If invited, they complete a full proposal outlining their mission, project, budget, and desired outcomes.
Once the proposal is submitted, staff review it for eligibility, alignment with strategic priorities, capacity of the organization, budget clarity, and expected impact. A volunteer or advisory committee may then evaluate the proposals, conduct follow‑up questions or interviews, and make recommendations. For smaller, less formal awards the staff may make decisions without full board review. Grantees are notified of decisions and required to enter into a grant agreement if selected.
Following an award, organizations receive funding and are responsible for executing the proposed project. They are required to submit periodic reports—often a final report—that document how funds were spent, what the outcomes were, and how they tracked progress against their goals. The foundation uses these reports to assess impact and inform future funding. The process encourages transparent budgeting, measurable results, and readiness to administer the funds. If an organization already holds an outstanding grant with incomplete reporting, that may affect eligibility for new funding.
This process is designed to ensure that funding is directed to organizations and projects that reflect the foundation’s strategic focus, have the capacity to execute the proposal successfully, and can demonstrate meaningful benefit to their communities.
