Summary

This funding program is geared toward nonprofit organizations working across a seven-county region in Western New York (including Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, and Wyoming counties). The aim is to support groups with strong missions, especially those focusing on food systems, organizational capacity, leadership development, and systems change. The region-based emphasis means local impact and alignment with regional priorities are key.

Eligible applicants are nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations headquartered in the seven-county region. The program is not open to individuals, religious organizations for religious purposes, private campaigns, or government entities in many cases. Applicants should have a defined purpose, a strong leadership structure, and an interest in building longer-term organizational strength rather than simply one-time events.

Funds can be used in a variety of ways — for example, strengthening core operations, improving board and staff leadership, expanding communications, building collaborative relationships, or developing strategic growth plans. Particularly welcomed are projects that touch the food system (nutrition access, local production, equity, sustainable food networks) and efforts that invest in nonprofit infrastructure so the organization is better equipped for the future.

Award amounts vary depending on the program and organization size. Smaller capacity-building grants may fund modest investments; larger multi-phase grants support more transformational work. The organization tracks hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant distribution per year.

The application process typically includes a Letter of Intent (LOI) phase followed by an invited full proposal. Deadlines occur multiple times per year — for instance one cycle might open in late May, with LOI deadline in July, full application by August, and grant decision in November. Another cycle may begin in November with corresponding deadlines in the following months.

If your nonprofit is located in Western New York, has a strong focus on food systems or capacity-building, and is committed to community impact and sustainability, this grant opportunity could be a great fit for your work.
