Community Services and Neighborhood Development Grants in California
GrantID: 57742
Grant Funding Amount Low: $5,000
Deadline: Ongoing
Grant Amount High: $5,000
Summary
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations and public agencies. The total award amounts can vary widely depending on the funding source, but recent examples include a multi-year award of about $1.6 million for a coordinated service initiative. Issues funding through several programs: a block grant stream for programs serving low-income residents, a health-care-district partnership for health-and-wellness work, and a community benefit fund tied to cannabis operations for interventions in youth prevention, mental health, diversion from the justice system and workforce development.
Eligible applicants are qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofits or governmental/public agencies. Individuals or for-profit businesses alone are not eligible under these particular streams. The geographic focus is strictly within the city limits (and in some cases the adjoining city served by the same health-care district). Priority is placed on programs that serve low-income, underserved, or vulnerable populations, including youth, seniors, disabled adults, homeless persons, or those with health or economic barriers.
The intent of the funds is to support community-serving activities such as housing support, job and workforce services, mental health and substance-use prevention, diversion programs, infrastructure improvement for public-service providers, and other efforts that strengthen the community’s wellbeing. Funds may be used for direct project expenses, program delivery, and sometimes capacity building — but are typically not intended for general operating expenses of unrelated business ventures.
The grant benefits include substantial financial backing to organizations that may otherwise struggle to access major funding, along with recognition and partnership with the municipal and district agencies. Because there are multiple funding streams, there is flexibility in focus — but each stream has its own evaluation criteria, timeline, and performance requirements. If your nonprofit is based in the city and focused on one of the priority areas, this could be a strong fit.
