Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, individual researchers, cultural institutions, and community groups working on projects that engage the public in humanities topics. These can include local history initiatives, literature programs, public conversations, exhibitions, film and media storytelling, oral history projects, educational workshops, and other programs designed to make the humanities accessible and relevant to diverse audiences.

Grant awards range from smaller amounts suitable for community-based or pilot projects to several thousand dollars for larger initiatives, with some programs providing general operating support to small cultural heritage organizations. Funding is intended to stimulate thoughtful dialogue, preserve cultural and historical knowledge, build public engagement with humanities work, and foster connections between residents and their communities. Projects supported by these grants often focus on increasing audience participation, promoting cultural awareness, strengthening civic understanding, and ensuring that humanities programming remains inclusive, accessible, and impactful across the Rhode Island region.
