Montana Renewable Resource Grants for Local Projects
GrantID: 69242
Grant Funding Amount Low: $35,000
Deadline: Ongoing
Grant Amount High: $50,000
Summary
A variety of state-level grant programs are available to support conservation, resource management, infrastructure, and environmental protection projects throughout Montana. These funding opportunities are intended to assist eligible public entities, local governments, conservation districts, tribal governments, and, in some cases, private individuals and organizations with projects that improve natural resource conditions, preserve water and land quality, and strengthen community resilience.
Several major grant streams exist, with funding amounts ranging from modest to substantial depending on the program and project type. Some grants may fund onsite planning, design, construction, or rehabilitation efforts related to renewable natural resources, with project grants often available up to approximately $125,000 per project. Emergency grants can provide awards up to roughly $30,000 for urgent repairs or projects that address imminent threats to water, wastewater, soil, or similar resource systems. Technical assistance and planning grants support preparatory work for larger implementation efforts.
Another funding stream focuses on reclamation and development. Grants in this category help public entities mitigate environmental damage associated with historical mineral development, hazardous waste sites, or other crucial state needs such as drought response and high-hazard dam repair. Individual awards can be recommended up to approximately $500,000 when projects demonstrate significant resource benefits and urgent need.
Additional state-funded grants support conservation districts for on-the-ground resource work, educational programs, and operational capacity. These may include planning and project grants with funding in the tens of thousands of dollars. Smaller education outreach and administration grants help districts deliver conservation education or cover basic administrative needs. Eligibility for these opportunities is generally restricted to local government entities, tribal governments, conservation districts, and other public or quasi-public bodies operating within Montana, though specific grant categories allow private applicants and associations for water-related projects that demonstrate public benefit.
The intended use of funds centers on improving natural resource conservation outcomes, protecting water and land resources, enhancing infrastructure related to environmental stewardship, and fostering sustainable management practices statewide. Grants benefit communities by enabling necessary planning, engineering, rehabilitation, and emergency response actions that might otherwise be financially out of reach for local governments or resource districts in Montana.
