Summary
This grant supports individual artists or writers in the United States (or those holding a particular work visa) to pursue a creative project over the course of one year. The focus alternates: in one cycle, the award goes to a sculptor to develop new work; in the next, to a writer producing writing on sculpture. The intent is to nurture creative voices working where visual form and language intersect, helping recipients deepen their practice and make a meaningful contribution to their field.
Only one grant is awarded in each cycle, so it is competitive and selective. The typical award amount is $20,000. Funds may be used for project-related costs such as materials, research, travel, living expenses, and artist compensation—expenses directly tied to creating new work. However, funds are not intended for paying tuition, purchasing real estate, repaying debts, or covering marketing or promotional costs.
To apply, eligible individuals must not be enrolled in a degree program at the time of application, and they must not be employed by or closely affiliated with the awarding organization (e.g. board members or immediate family). Applicants must meet citizenship, residency, or visa requirements. Previous winners are typically ineligible to reapply for a number of years. The process involves submitting a project proposal, work samples or writing samples, and possibly moving to a second round of review with budget and timeline details.
Deadlines are fixed in each cycle (for example, a late-spring deadline) with notifications of finalists and then a final award announcement later in the year. While the program only makes one award per cycle, it runs continuously according to its alternating schedule, so each field (sculpture or writing) is funded every two years.
The core benefit is not only financial support but also public recognition, encouragement, and the opportunity to focus deeply on a creative project without the strain of multiple funding sources.
