GrantID: 76161
Grant Funding Amount Low: $10,000
Deadline: Ongoing
Grant Amount High: $20,000
Summary
Grants intended to help eligible organizations preserve, document, and share historical and cultural heritage within the state. Funding supports activities such as research, historic site surveys, preservation planning, documentation of local heritage, and partnership development that helps communities maintain and interpret their past.
The primary funding stream is a competitive heritage grants program that makes small awards of up to about $10,000 and larger awards that start above $20,000, with total funding pools reaching into the millions of dollars across multiple recipients in a cycle. Awards are made quarterly for smaller grants and annually for larger ones, giving applicants multiple opportunities throughout the year to seek support for their projects.
Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, units of state and local government, educational institutions, and federally recognized tribal governments that are based in and operate within Minnesota. Individuals and for-profit businesses generally are not eligible to apply directly for these historic preservation grants. Projects must be ready to begin upon award and demonstrate a meaningful connection to preserving and sharing Minnesota’s cultural and historical resources.
Grant funds are intended to cover a wide range of activities associated with documenting and safeguarding history, such as preparing National Register nominations, conducting historic resource surveys, developing public programs or exhibits, or strengthening organizational capacity for long-term heritage stewardship. There are also other related programs listed through the same preservation network that offer additional grant possibilities in varied dollar amounts, including capacity building partnerships and preservation of unique cultural resources. Together, these funding opportunities help support ongoing efforts to protect and celebrate community history across Minnesota.
